Step 1 - Contouring the Internal Staves

Contour Staves
With a little patience, you can easily bend the two Internal Staves to the contour of the back as illustrated in the above diagram and detailed below.

Directions for Contouring the Internal Staves

  1. First, remove the Internal Staves from the backpack.

  2. Hold the Internal Stave vertically against the back, at the position the Internal Stave will be at when inserted into the backpack, on either side of the spine.

  3. Ensure that the Internal Staves, and therefore the backpack, do not protrude past the body by commencing at a point level to where the sacrum and coccyx meet. It is important to note that the average lower length of Internal Stave below the hipbone or Iliac Crest is 12.50cm. This lower length of frame before the first curve would then be between 11cm to 14cm depending on the Torso Length of the individual being fitted. All White Mountain Backpacks™ are by design, 14.00cm from the base of the Internal Stave to where the Hip Belt crosses the hipbone or Iliac Crest. With a White Mountain Backpacks™ backpack, the easiest way to know where to begin bending is to mark the Internal Stave at 14.00cm, then position this mark in the deepest part of the back at the Lumbar Vertebrae just above the Iliac Crest.

  4. Then contour the Internal Stave following the curve of the back either side of the spine to finishing position at the base of the neck.

  5. If contouring the Internal Stave above the base of the neck up to a maximum of 5cm, you must bend the extra length away from the neck at approximately 30ยบ from the vertical to allow for head movement. We do not recommend fitting an Internal Stave length longer than the maximum extended height of 5cm.

  6. Check that the individual back you are fitting is symmetrical, as you may need to bend each Stave a little differently. Generally, the individual back will be symmetrical and you can bend the second Internal Stave to the match the first Internal Stave you have contoured.
