Internet Scams
We have all heard tales of pyramid schemes and other rip-offs orchestrated
by con-artists and scammers, that result in heart-breaking financial loss.
The online world certainly has its fair share of disreputable dealers, attracted
by the comparative anonymity of Web sites and the prospect of reaching a
potential audience of millions. There are very few Internet-only scams:
most are simply old-fashioned scams that have been slightly modified for
the Internet (such as the notorious Nigerian scam letters). You will find
the same kind of "get-rich-quick" schemes online as you will find advertised
in magazines and classifieds. Thankfully, there are a number of Web resources
dedicated to alerting Internet users to the dangers of online scams. The
US Federal Trade Commission has published its list of the 12 most common
scams being circulated online, which is certainly worth reviewing.
