Fitting Backpacks
Harness Systems
SYS Harness - Superior Yoke System (Replaced by the SSS
Harness)
The
ladder Harness System was a favourite with backpack designers
for many years. The SYS has a single adjustable T-Yoke for
stable performance that eliminates backpack sway. The Internal
Staves are parallel in this Harness System transferring the load
to the muscles on the lower back either side of the Sacrum at
the base of the spine. The Torso Length is adjustable in 5 cm
increments by moving the Shoulder Harness T-Yoke up or down the
webbing ladder as required. This adjustment provides a facility
to optimise the Upper Load Stabilizer Strap pull position from
the shoulder. The Ladder Harness System is not a true unisex
harness and was responsible for prompting some designers to
develop separate harness systems for women.
Features
Haul Loop, Dual Parallel Internal Aluminium Staves,
Adjustable T-Yoke on a webbing ladder, Dual Density Foam Padded
Shoulder Straps and Hip Belt, Breathable Mesh on a Removable
Back Cushion, Padded Hip Belt and Padded Lumbar Cushion, a
Sliding Sternum Strap, Shoulder Strap D-Rings, Upper and Lower
Stabilizer Straps, Dual Adjustable Waist Buckle and Keepers on
the Waist Belt.
Torso Length
The SYS Harness System allows for an effective adjustment
range of 4 cm below and 8 cm above the optimum or medium Torso
Length in 5 cm increments.
Superseded
Now superseded, the SYS Harness System was previously
available on the Holiday, Pacific, Antarctica, Main Peak and
Basecamp series of White Mountain backpacks. The SYS Harness
System was the superseded by the SSS Harness System.
How do you fit SYS Ladder System
-
Remove, contour, and install the two internal parallel
Internal Staves. These two Internal Staves are easily
located at the top of the backpack, behind two press-stud
tabs.
-
Place the backpack on the one shoulder of the individual,
with the Hip Belt undone.
-
NOTE: If you are right-handed yourself perform
this operation on the left side of the individual, or, if
left-handed perform this procedure on the right side of the
individual.
-
Position the backpack on the individual, with the
Internal Staves following the contour of the back and the
top of the Hip Belt in the correct position level with or
just below the top of the hipbone or Iliac Crest. Do this by
pulling down on the one Shoulder Strap that is over the one
shoulder of the individual.
-
The optimum position of the T-Yoke can then be determined
by where the Shoulder Strap finally comes to rest. The exit
point of the Upper Load Stabilizer Strap from the Shoulder
Strap should come to rest below the Clavicle in front of the
shoulder. Estimate the amount of adjustment required up or
down in centimetres remembering that each position change on
the White Mountain Ladder is in 5 cm increments.
-
Adjust the T-Yoke up or down on the backpack by loosening
the Upper Load Stabilizer Straps, undoing the T-Yoke buckle
and repositioning as required. Take care to feed the webbing
through the backpack webbing, the T-Yoke Buckle, the
backpack webbing, the T-Yoke webbing and then through the
backpack webbing to the top of the backpack.
-
NOTE: The T-Yoke is adjustable in 5 cm increments,
which is the distance between each web position for the
T-Yoke Buckle.
-
NOTE: With the SYS or SHS Harness System, White
Mountain™ supply a removable Back Cushion to fill the gap
between the back and the backpack to provide further
comfort. This Back Cushion is removable if further
ventilation is required, and when removed will not interfere
with the harness performance. Position this Back Cushion on
the Velcro provided, directly under the Shoulder Strap
padding on top of the T-Yoke.
-
With the Back Cushion in place, pull on the Upper Load
Stabilizer Straps located at the top of the Internal Staves
to form a gentle arc in the Shoulder Straps and for ease of
location, feed the excess of webbing through the Shoulder
Strap D-Rings. Pulling these Upper Load Stabilizer Straps to
this point enables the individual to put the backpack on,
without it pulling away from the back.
-
Put the backpack on the individual and have them pull the
two Shoulder Straps simultaneously down and towards the
backpack. This will gently draw the backpack into position
with the Internal Staves following the contour of your back.
-
Provided you have positioned the Torso Length correctly,
the pull position of the Upper Load Stabilizer Straps will
now be below the Clavicle, or Collar Bone and you should
discover that the Hip Belt is in the correct position level
with or just below the top of the hipbone or Iliac Crest.
-
NOTE: White Mountain™ do provide sliding buckles
on the Shoulder Straps for a finite adjustment in the
placement of the Upper Load Stabilizer Strap pull position,
but it is our opinion that these in the majority need not be
used and can stay positioned hard against the Shoulder Strap
D-Ring. These sliding buckles can, however, be moved up to
25 mm in either direction to optimise the position of pull
from the shoulder.
