Air Flow System
The
AFS Harness System is a fixed harness with longer Shoulder
Straps, a Sternum Strap, a
HDPE
Frame Sheet, a single Internal Stave, Hip Belt with Lower
Load Stabilizer Straps, and
Airflow Mesh. This combination allows the backpack to sit
comfortably low on the back and effectively transfer the load to
the muscles on the lower back, chest and back of the shoulders.
White Mountain™ then cover the padded back, inside of the Hip
Belt and Shoulder Straps with Airflow Mesh for maximum
ventilation.

The AFS Harness has Shoulder Straps that are longer than a
standard daypack to allow positioning of the backpack on the
lower back. This lower positioning of the backpack places the
weight squarely on the lower back muscles on either side of the
spine and allows correct positioning of the Hip Belt for maximum
comfort under load.
This AFS Harness includes a full padded Hip Belt to
comfortably draw the backpack into the lower back. This allows
for an effective transfer of the weight to the lower back when
required.
The Sternum Strap assists in positioning the Shoulder Straps,
and alleviates excess pressure on the shoulders by placing some
of the backpack weight on the padded area of the chest. The
Sternum Strap also prevents the Shoulder Straps from slipping
onto the shoulder joint or off the shoulder.
Only the Trail Blazer currently has Lower Load Stabilizer
Straps. White Mountain will introduce this feature as the
standard in the AFS Harness, in the near future.
Compression Straps are an essential feature of an Internal
Frame Backpack and allow you to compress the backpack around
loaded equipment to provide a tight and stable load.
Sandwiched behind the AFS Harness System, between the
three-dimensional mesh and the HDPE frame sheet, is a
high-density foam pad. This Padded Back cushions the impact of
heavy loads on the body.
The White Mountain™ Horizon, Trail Blazer and the Lyrebird
(pictured) have a frame sheet across the back that is made of a
high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a flexible but strong plastic
with a single vertical Internal Stave. This allows moulding of
the HDPE frame sheet to the individual back, which then
transfers the load to the muscles on the lower back either side
of the Sacrum or the base of the spine.

A tremendous advance in material technology, a triple layered
mesh that breathes and wicks moisture from the body. The inside
of the Hip Belt, Shoulder Straps and the padded back of this
harness system is covered in this Airflow Mesh
