Members of our Victorian State Emergency Service unit updated to a choice
of two different types of hydration packs from White Mountain. Six members
selected the Trailblazer with hydration bladder and one chose the Lyrebird
with hydration bladder. We were undertaking an advanced map reading and
navigation course through the Pyrites National Park. Packs when loaded averaged
out at 11.5 kilograms (mine weighed 11.8 kilograms). We hiked approximately
14 kilometres on the first day with temperatures at 25-degrees Celsius.
It was cross country navigation (scrub and bush bashing) and in steep country.
Excellent instruction in pack fitting was afforded by Garry at White Mountain
so all packs were correctly fitted prior to use. All members reported a
very comfortable days activities and the member with the Lyrebird said he
had to remind himself occasionally that he had a pack on his back. The new
'cool mesh' on the harness worked a treat, with minimum perspiring (bear
in mind we wear quite heavy protective overalls). Harness straps did not
move around, pinch, chafe or loosen during hiking. Ample straps and loops
ensured we could carry the additional climbing helmets, safety gear, torches
etc that we are required to carry as standard equipment. The 2.7-litre capacity
bladder fitted into the internal purpose built sleeve and remained in place
very well. Despite some very rough treatment in the scrub, not a single
tear or loose harness stitch. Remaining water in the bladder on the second
day had no hint of taste. All members were so impressed we are about to
order six additional packs as standard unit equipment and those members
with other brand packs are now going to convert to the new packs as tested.
I am already a convert to White Mountain Backpacks and have been for several
years. My kids used the University packs for school (the only packs that
lasted more than six months) and I have used a Main Peak for hiking for
several years, updating twice in that time. These new packs have converted
more people to the range of products. The important aspect is that the White
Mountain people are interested in positive feedback on what improvements
can be made to their products and you know they will consider them in future
design phases. The greatest benefit is that on the couple of occasions a
zip has broken, my pack has been fixed quickly with no fuss. So chalk me
up as a happy customer.
