Origin of Name
A great deal of people believe the name White Mountain™ originated in Alaska,
but the White Mountain™ name is actually derived from Mount Paektu, an extinct
volcano in North Korea. Translated from Korean, Mount Paektu is White Headed
Mountain. White Headed Mountain was then shortened to White Mountain™.
Mount Paektu in North Korea
Lake Chon-ji fills the crater on top of Mount Paektu in the northern
mountains of North Korea. Chon-ji is a natural lake that was formed in the
crater. Its area is 14.4 square kilometres and its maximum depth is 384
meters, the deepest in the world. This extinct volcano is Korea’s highest
mountain, rising to 2,744 metres (9,003 feet). Mount Paektu was made a biosphere
reserve in 1989. A biosphere reserve is a nationally or internationally
protected area managed primarily to preserve natural ecological processes.
Biosphere reserves are often open to tourists.
